December is the busiest wedding season in Ghana by a wide margin. The diaspora comes home, families are together, and everyone wants the same handful of weekends. That makes it the best month to get married here — and the hardest.
If you're set on December, the difference between a smooth wedding and a stressful one is almost entirely how early you start.

Why December is different here
Ghana in December isn't simply a busy month — it's a homecoming. Ghanaians abroad plan their year around being back, which means your guest list is more likely to be complete in December than at any other time. For couples marrying from the diaspora, that's usually the whole reason for the date.
It also means you're competing with everyone else who worked it out. Weddings, funerals, family gatherings and festivals all converge on the same weeks, and the vendors you want are serving all of them.
When to book for a December wedding
Work backwards from the date, and start earlier than feels reasonable.
- 18 months out — if you have a specific venue or photographer in mind, this is when to approach them. The best are booked this far ahead for December.
- 12 months out — the practical deadline for venue, photography and videography. After this you're choosing from what's left rather than who you wanted.
- 9 months — caterer, decor, and traditional wear. Hand-woven kente and custom tailoring need production time, not just a booking slot.
- 6 months — makeup, music, cake, transport. Tell your guests now, so they can book flights before fares climb.
- 3 months — confirm numbers, settle balances, and book your own travel.

Harmattan: the thing nobody warns you about
From around late November, the harmattan blows dry, dust-laden air down from the Sahara across Ghana. For a wedding it matters in specific, practical ways.
The light goes hazy. Skies turn milky rather than blue, and the golden hour softens. Good photographers know how to work with it — but if you've shown yours a Pinterest board of hard sunlight and deep blue sky, have that conversation early.
Dust gets on everything. Outdoor decor set up the night before will need going over in the morning. White fabric, in particular, does not stay white outdoors for long.
The air is dry. Guests with asthma or sensitive chests feel it. So do flowers — locally sourced blooms wilt faster in harmattan than your florist's portfolio shots from June might suggest.
None of this is a reason to avoid December. It's a reason to mention it to your photographer, your florist and your decorator, and let them plan for it.
Choosing your date within December
Not all December weekends are equal.
The crush is Christmas to New Year. The 23rd through the 31st is the most contested stretch of the year — for vendors, venues, traffic and your guests' attention. Everything is harder and more expensive.
Early December is the quiet secret. The first two weekends have noticeably better availability, and the diaspora crowd is largely already home. You get the guest list without the peak-week scramble.
Early January deserves a look too. Many people who travel for December are still in the country into the first week or two of January, and vendors are far more available once the festive rush has passed.
If your date is flexible at all, moving a week either side of the peak is the single biggest lever you have on both price and availability.
Planning a December wedding on short notice
If December is close and you're only starting now, it's tight but not hopeless. Change the order you do things.
- Lock the venue first, and be flexible on the date. Ask what they actually have rather than naming a date and hoping. A Friday or a Sunday opens up options a Saturday won't.
- Book photography next. It's the vendor most likely to be gone, and the one you'll regret most.
- Consider early December or January before you compromise on vendors you care about.
